All About Me...I grew up in Garland, Texas, the only child of two educators. After graduation, I attended Oklahoma Baptist University for the first two years of my undergraduate work. I transferred to Texas A&M in College Station to complete my Bachelor of Science degree in Curriculum and Instructions. I taught in Garland ISD for the next 6 years at Shugart Elementary. Then I helped in the opening of Beaver Technology Center for Math and Science as a 3rd grade teacher. I was fortunate to be able to take 3 years off when my daughter was born. When I returned to teaching, I taught 3rd grade at Park Crest Elementary. I spent many hours during and after school in the library reading with and to my students. I felt I could service more students as a librarian. When a librarian position opened at Park Crest, I accepted and began my Master’s degree in Library and Informational Technology.
When our family moved to Hopkins County in East Texas, I became the district librarian for 6 elementary schools in Sulphur Springs ISD. Each school had a para in place and I was more of an administrator creating lesson plans, placing orders, managing the budget, providing professional development, and maintaining the collection. While there, I added much needed technology. I added multiple computers so students could do research and search the OPAC. I purchased iPads and flat screens for the library as well as updated their automation system. In 2014, I was offered and accepted a position at Region 8 ESC as Library & Media Coordinator. There are 21 districts with 50 schools that I visit every two weeks. These districts hire paras for their libraries. My service includes building their collections, cataloging, placing orders, providing professional development, and working with administration. I am also available to all the certified librarians at all levels in the other 25 districts in Region 8. I provide technical assistance and professional development to both paras and certified librarians throughout the year. During the school year, I schedule monthly collaborative meetings and trainings sessions. Annually, I host a Library & Technology Conference for all these library leaders. The latest conference was our biggest ever with 60 vendors and a little over 250 participants in September 2018. Part of my job is to negotiate pricing for resources for the schools in our Library Instruction Technology Education Coop (L.I.T.E.). |
